Already on the international Autoshow scene, MERCEDES on 4 January 1999, presented in Detroit a Gran Turismo for the 21st. Century - Vision SLR. The Car mentioned would unite the style items of the current formula 1Silberpfeil and the SLR sports car from the fifties to a new concept.

For the first time an electrical hydraulic brake system is used with the Zweituerer, which calculates the brake pressure by sensors and microprocessors depending upon driving conditions and thus offers clear safety advantages while driving along curves or on smooth roadways.

Headlights with adaptive light systems and new high speed light emitting diodes follow the steering angle automatically and adapt to the respective driving conditions - illuminating the roadway improves clearly when driving along curves.

Compressor and water load air cooling develops the eight-cylinder to an output of 410 KW - a max. torque of 720 Newtonmeters or 557 HP @ 4000/rpm..

Under the body of the MERCEDES SLR, are systems and components which MERCEDES BENZ presents for the first time, such as the electronically controlled Sensortronic Brake system, headlight with curve light function and brake disks from ceramic(s).

MERCEDES SLR Vision points the way into the future for the MERCEDES sports car. The body consists of a combination of GRP components materials and aluminum, which is characterised with exemplary Crash stability with its weight advantage of approximately 40 per cent compared to conventional structural steelworks.
Also the brake disks of the MERCEDES Vision SLR are a new development: They consist of fiber-reinforced ceramic(s) and withstand extreme loads. Front and rear axles are made mostly of aluminum.

Under the elongated hood of the MERCEDES Vision SLR is a V8 engine with 5.5 litres capacity with compressor and water load air cooling.

MERCEDES vision SLR has incredible acceleration:
From zero ton 100 km/h in only 4.2 seconds and from zero to 200 km/h in 11.3 seconds. The maximum speed is 320 km/h.

A very limited number of these cars will be built - only the very largest Benz dealers will get one. These cars will be equivalent, in stature and prestige, to the Ferrari F50 and will command outrageous "over sticker" prices. And, like the F50, an early investment in one of these SLRs will surely prove very profitable.

We have secured a contract for one of the first SLRs arriving in the US. Speculation is that the suggested retail price will be somewhere in the $385,000 range. We will sell the contract for the best offer over sticker.
